Pundits pedalling lazy cliches is a poisonous part of the English game. There are many highly intelligent casual football fans, or very good footballers, (some are even both) out there are some who don&rsquo;t have a natural gift for understanding the game. The views of this large group are largely shaped by the footballing media they are exposed to.

Understandably so. When you hear an analysis of a game by Craig Burley compared to a Guillem Balague, the chasm of quality is as huge as the difference in thoughtfulness on the pitch between Charlie Adam and Andrea Pirlo. In the UK, our understanding of the game is way behind many of the top nations. It shows in our players, and it surely shows in our pundits.

It is dangerous to take everything you hear or read on face value.

For example; &ldquo;The best team always wins the league.&rdquo;

When was this scientifically proven?

The quality of a team is an intangible, something open to interpretation, with success being merely the main ingredient used to make a judgment.

Over the years I came to accept this statement as a fact rather than an opinion or cliche. The final league tables in the Premiership and La Liga in May gave me reason to question the belief which had been formed from what I&rsquo;d heard many pass off as factual.

The two Manchester clubs fought a fierce two horse race from very early on last season, one that had a few twists. With United&rsquo;s final game already finished City still required two goals to become Champions. And with a matter of seconds remaining, Sergio Aguero scored THAT history making goal, stealing the title from Sir Alex Ferguson&rsquo;s tightly clenched grip.

When such fine margins decide who finishes above who, how can anyone say with complete certainty which of the teams was really better. This is not to say City weren&rsquo;t worthy Champions. It is difficult for anyone to claim after 38 games, a team finishing first out of 20 is undeserving. That does not automatically mean they were the best though.

Real Madrid finished nine points ahead of the team frequently afforded the precursor, &lsquo;the greatest team in footballing history&rsquo;. So why is no one lauding Jose Mourinho&rsquo;s team in similar fashion? Simply put, the Real Madrid team which finished first in La Liga in 2011-12, is not of the same quality as the Barcelona team which finished second.

Despite the disparity in points, the only thing supporting claims that Real Madrid are better than Barcelona is that cliche I have quoted above.

While people will readily admit that winning a Cup competition, even the drawn out Champions League, can sometimes be attributed to factors other than the quality of the team, they will literally become defensive over a claim that winning a league can be achieved by a team which was not the best.

What makes 38 the magic number? Why is that the amount of games where luck (injuries, suspensions, other external factors) magically &lsquo;even themselves out&rsquo;?

38 matches while more than any team has to play to win a Cup, is not a definitive sample size, assuring the best team always wins.

I have decided to start a rival cliche; &ldquo;The best team doesn&rsquo;t necessarily win the league.&rdquo; Hopefully it will catch on.

Another example of the abuse of power by the footballing media in this country is the demonization of Luis Suarez. I&rsquo;ve already argued extensively about the racism issue but this was something which started way before the infamous Patrice Evra incident.

Luis Suarez was a footballer way before the 2010 World Cup when he made an incredible illegal save to deny Ghana a place in the Semi Finals. Rewind a few years, where was the vilification Suarez would come to receive when Phil Neville did exactly the same thing to a young Lucas Leiva. A goal in a Merseyside derby would have made the young Brazilian an instant hero at Anfield, but instead he didn&rsquo;t get credit for the converted penalty and went through three years of abuse from a large section of his own fans before eventually proving them all wrong.

Neither Neville nor Suarez deserves criticism in my eyes. It is something I would do for my team without thinking. But with one it was instantly forgotten, whilst the other was made into a pantomime villain.

Suarez is no angel on the pitch, but he is surely no John Terry off it. When you hear about Suarez the man, you hear about someone who loves his family and gets along famously with his team mates. But if you were to believe the English press, the Uruguayan is the definition of evil. I would hate to see the press Liverpool&rsquo;s star would get if he behaved like Chelsea&rsquo;s captain off the pitch.

People often seem to get wound up in arguments with me. I assume it&rsquo;s because I come across as arrogant when I&rsquo;m making my points. I am obviously going to believe in my own opinion, or it wouldn&rsquo;t be my opinion. I don&rsquo;t ask anyone to agree with me for the sake of it. I do ask you to convince me otherwise. I will change my opinion if I am given reason to no longer think I am correct.

I hear way too many recycled opinions from people when they talk about football. Often if you argue with these types of people and you dig a little deeper, they can struggle to substantiate their views, and this stems from the fact that they are not actually their views.

The overall point I am trying to make is I would implore you to challenge everything you hear and read. Don&rsquo;t just take something as gospel because someone on TV who used to play football said it.

Just another gripe about pundits

England expects. England turns up and battles hard. England can&rsquo;t keep possession. England gets outclassed. England goes home. Time for an inquest. Premier League starts. Forget the inquest. Players get overhyped. Another tournament comes around. Previous failings are forgotten and ignored. England expects. England turns up and&hellip; here we go again old sport.

Listening to the criticisms of the U21 side that just got eliminated in Israel is the exact type of misinformed jibber jabber that inspired the birth of our site. Having gone into the European Championships with an aim of winning it against teams most pundits know nothing about, blind expectations were high. The likes of Thomas Ince, Wilfried Zaha and Jack Butland are highly valued in English football. Therefore they must be better than the random, unknown foreigners.

When these randoms outplay the Three Lions, the search for clues by the clueless ensues. Searching for reasons of failure will offer more options than an English midfielder has in possession. The players are tired. They don&rsquo;t play enough. Too many foreigners in the English game. Lack of technique. Too direct. Too much money, they don&rsquo;t want it enough. We need development. Look at the Germans. We need a centre of excellence like Clairefontaine. Blah blah blah.&nbsp;Whatever Trevor (Brooking). I will come back to all these arguments in a bit.

The superiority complex in English sport means winning titles is everything and not achieving that makes you a loser. Regardless of ability and reasonable expectation. The Henman effect. The quarter finals under Sven were par for the level of ability in those squads yet surprise was abundant when defeats were met. Even results can be overrated. Greece won Euro 2004 fairly but it hardly meant they were one of the top teams.

One of the fair criticisms to come out of Israel is why eligible players, such as Phil Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain aren&rsquo;t included in tournaments they qualify for. The fact they are full internationals is a misread sign of graduation particularly if you are The Ox and can&rsquo;t get in the Arsenal starting line up. Anyhow, the mistakes these U21 kids displayed &ndash; lack of possession, lack of technique, lack of imagination &ndash; are displayed by the seniors at every major finals. So they all seem ready to make the step up to mediocrity to me. There is a strange snobbishness within English football where competitions like U21 finals and the Olympics are snubbed. The double Euro Champs and World Cup holders Spain sent a strong squad to the Olympics featuring World Cup winners and in Israel have &pound;20m rated players such as Isco, Thiago and De Gea. Yet Arsenal subs are too good for the U21&prime;s. Let them play.<img src="https://admin.wemakefootballers.com/storage/article/mike-and-steve.jpg" style="float:right; height:452px; width:435px" />

So come tournament time England must win the trophy and many believe in them because they play for successful Premier League teams. Then they get shown up time and again and suddenly everyone is amazed. Let the puzzled scrambling for reasons ensue. For a short while at least. So how do we get from a &ldquo;Golden Generation&rdquo; of world class, expensive players to those that are unable to keep the ball? Maybe, just maybe it is because they are not quite&nbsp;that&nbsp;good to begin with?

The likes of Gerrard and Lampard have many qualities. However they have limitations too that mean they do not control top level games from central midfield. Characteristically they have contributed an incredible amount of goals from midfield. But here&rsquo;s the thing and this is a crucial secret.. Goals have been a smokescreen for many an England player&rsquo;s overall ability. If you can&rsquo;t keep the ball versus top opposition when the pressure is at its peak then I am sorry but you are not a top player. It&rsquo;s not that they &ldquo;can&rsquo;t play together&rdquo;. It&rsquo;s more that compared to top central midfielders like Xavi, Iniesta and Pirlo, they can&rsquo;t play. I would wage that sticking either of them in the England U21 team would not improve the style of play. Though they are both miles better than the atrocious Jonjo Shelvey.

As for manager Stuart Pearce, trusting him to develop a technical team when he is the genius who sent on a goalkeeper up front (David James) to rescue a result for his Man City side, says it all.

This is NOT Total Football.

Now let&rsquo;s have a look at those earlier reasons..

Too much football? Perhaps, but lack of possession haunts England all year around against top teams not just in the summer. Anyhow, if your 100mph style means you tire then maybe, just maybe, a different style is more suitable for the sake of longevity?

Too little football? If they cannot get into a Premier League side (bare in mind Reading were a Prem team and Palace and Hull will be next season), they are a) not good enough or b) not ambitious enough. Kids from other parts of the world further their careers by moving abroad. Why shouldn&rsquo;t we expect English youngsters to do the same? Anyhow I&rsquo;ve seen teams such as Macedonia technically outperform the never-won-anything-Golden Generation and they were hardly elite performers.

Too many foreigners in the English game. The likes of Lampard and Gerrard have prospered in the Champions League and made telling contributions by being surrounded by top foreigners like Xabi Alonso, Michael Essien and Juan Mata. I&rsquo;d love to see how those teams would have got on with just home-grown players. You cant have it both ways.

&nbsp;

Lack of flair? Yes. Technique? Not so much. Rather technique under pressure. They can all control a ball and pass it five yards if it was me shutting them down but under pressure from top teams they &ndash; and this is a term for the FA&rsquo;s Technical Department &ndash; shit themselves and hide.

Desire? One of the more stupid arguments. If there is one thing England teams do not lack it is effort. They are hard to beat and are never lazy in defence. They are just not brave enough on the ball.

Too direct? Of course this is true. But direct football comes from the cultural desire for speedy and physical entertainment with the ball flying through the air with velocity over more intelligent, patient and skilful displays. Arsenal are a case in point. They received much more criticism for failing with their &ldquo;tippy tappy football&rdquo; and &ldquo;trying to score the perfect goal&rdquo; instead of the current crop that gets loads of incomplete crosses in and hoof the ball away from centre. And I haven&rsquo;t even started my rant at the epidemic mistrust of skilful, creative types.

The hopeful ones out there want a German style overhaul that was undertaken following a dismal Euro 2000 as if there is a parallel. That, however, is not a relevant starting point. The Germans won Euro 96 and Italia 90 and their standards were in decline by 2000. But those teams still have the underlying culture of playing technical, thoughtful football. That is not the dominant philosophy around the UK. So their foundations were still more ripe for blooming the next generation. The chance of a Reus, Gotze and Ozil being developed in England are, in the current climate, very very unlikely.&nbsp;Yet many a strong man, who can kick a ball hard, like Shelvey will still come through.

Hand on heart I would love to see an England team both expressive and imaginative. However, my head says, developing and promoting these players in the current cultural climate is not happening any time soon. The sad thing is you do not need millions of pounds to achieve that. Just a change of mindset and that comes for free.

All other reasons are irrelevant until we all, from fans to players and coaches, learn to appreciate the right qualities at the very beginning.

Why Do England Play Badly ?

&ldquo;Booooooooo!!&rdquo;

Some fans are unhappy at White Hart Lane. No wins in the first three games. The pressure is already on Andre Villas-Boas. Boo&rsquo;frickin&rsquo;hoo. We know he is under pressure because someone we know says he is under pressure and somone they know says he is under pressure. As a result he is officially under pressure. I feel sorry for him.

I am not one to disagree with a fan&rsquo;s right to boo. Sometimes it&rsquo;s the only platform for protest. But it is not always appropriate. Not after just three games without a win. Particularly if you are Tottenham Hotspur and you are not even in the elite.

Many fans are often fuelled by the 24/7 media as their inability to think for themselves is sadly all too obvious. The modern world of reality TV and instantaneous gratification is leading football down a dangerous path. Some of these fans remind me of the crowd in the 1980&rsquo;s cult classic film The Running Man. In the film Arnie has to evade glorified killers on a TV game show. They bay for the blood of one side, then as the wonderful plot and crap acting ensues, they switch allegiance and turn against their original cheery murderers.

It seems they are there for no reason other than to see someone, anyone, suffer a severe case of death. They remind me of the kind of tribal and aggressive fans who would rather cheer against another team or even boo the perceived enemy within over supporting their own club, thinking for themselves and enjoying the beautiful game. In short, these guys are pricks.

I think there have been some mistakes by AVB in the opening three games but deservedly or not they could have easily walked away with two wins from their first two home games. Those same fans would have uttered some clich&eacute; like &ldquo;Sign of a good team &ndash; not playing well and winning&rdquo;, before shouting &ldquo;Wanker!&rdquo; at any member of the opposition who dared to score against their side.

If these fans were at Old Trafford in the autumn of 1986 and got their way, they would have helped get rid of their new manager. Sir Alex Ferguson would now be known as Alex Ferguson; a weird Scottish guy who tried to change too much, too quickly at Manchester United. We can&rsquo;t know with certainty how the season will unfold for Spurs and that is, surely, part of the fun.

So let&rsquo;s watch, think, praise even disagree with decisions from AVB. But let&rsquo;s not write him off after 270 minutes with a team that&rsquo;s been significantly overhauled in the summer. Excellent players have left but their replacements are promising too. The undermining of AVB has been going on since he arrived in the Premier League in 2011. I don&rsquo;t remember seeing much criticism of Frank Lampard last season when he publicly complained and sulked at being left out despite a series of anonymous displays at the start of the campaign. Just imagine if Mario Balotelli had done that. Instead it was AVB&rsquo;s fault for not getting Lampard onside.

After the coup was completed, the extra effort put in by many at Chelsea just proved the level of unprofessionalism and spite in previous months. Yet Lampard and co were seen as worthy mutineers that went on to (luckily and fairly) win the Champions League whilst AVB became the poster boy of man management failure. If his squad was bolstered as well as Di Matteo&rsquo;s has been this summer I wonder if his time in West London would have been different?

So with his reputation somewhat unfairly tainted by some Blue goons (again he made errors of his own during his time at Stamford Bridge) there was always a section that was waiting for an excuse to get on his back. Just imagine if, say, club legend Ledley King was appointed as Harry Redknapp&rsquo;s successor. If he presided over the same three results I would stake my house that he would have been &ldquo;given time&rdquo; by those intellegistas in the stands. Popularity over proof of quality; it&rsquo;s amazing how many times it wins out in football. Think managerial disasters like Alan Shearer, Diego Maradona and Paul Gascoigne. On what basis were they ever appointed? Ludicrous. There are some lunatics running Asylum FC.&nbsp;<img src="https://admin.wemakefootballers.com/storage/article/wmf_ilustration_artes-09.png" style="float:right; height:454px; width:351px" />

Even the aforementioned Redknapp has been mischievously giving interviews on his former club and heir dropping bombs like, &ldquo;I left them with a squad capable of winning the league.&rdquo; With a straight Face. They finished 20 points behind Manchester City and United in May. So let&rsquo;s look at each situation on its own merit.

Tottenham underperformed for me despite finishing fourth last year. Luckily for them, other teams near the top also underperformed. It was supposed to be a bad season for Arsenal yet even they pipped this &ldquo;title winning squad&rdquo; in the table. However with a better prepared Arsenal and a more attackingly cohesive Chelsea resurging, Tottenham face a tougher challenge to stay in the Top 4 this season.

The challenge for AVB is to find a confident and creative, fluid and fearsome way of playing that allows talented players like Bale, Dembele and Adebayor to flourish. If he unlocks that conundrum he will have a team loved not only by the Spurs faithful, but what&rsquo;s more the neutrals.

And I am an Arsenal fan. COYS!

So the signs against an average Reading team were of that promise. Bale, Lennon and Dembele regularly posed a threat from deep. Supported by Sigurdsson and lethally finished by Defoe, suddenly the fluency was posing a frequent threat. If they have another couple of performances like this soon, those kneejerk jerks will probably be talking of winning the title and hail AVB as a messiah. Just a hunch but I doubt there will be much in between for this fickle bunch.

There is a famous line from Rudyard Kipling&rsquo;s poem If about treating triumph and disaster just the same. If you do so yours is the Earth and everything that&rsquo;s in it and what&rsquo;s more you&rsquo;ll be a Man my son. So give credit to these real men, who at least manage to treat victory and defeat with an equal amount of fury and a fair slice of screw ups (edited SL) that even Mr Kipling didn&rsquo;t see coming when penning his masterpiece.

Trying to understand the stands

A young boy from Ireland has been touted as the next Lionel Messi after signing for Barcelona&#39;s academy.

Zak Gilsenan from Castleknock caught the eye of several clubs including the Spanish giants after scoring seven goals in a trial game in Spain &ndash; despite only being nine years old.

After the game he earned the nickname of &lsquo;the Irish Messi&rsquo; and his parents have already said they are ready to relocate to Spain to help their son pursue his dream.

He has won a place at FCBE Scola, the football academy, and the&nbsp;La Masia building just outside their Camp Nou stadium into a hall of residence for young players living outside the city. It is now one of the most productive youth academies in the world.

The residence is used to develop the young players that have had to leave their families to train with the Catalan club. While there is much emphasis on turning youngsters into accomplished performers on the field, La Masia also strives to develop rounded human beings.

Current stars of the game to have graduated in recent years include&nbsp;<a href="http://worldsoccer.about.com/od/players/a/messiprofile.htm">Lionel Messi</a>,&nbsp;<a href="http://worldsoccer.about.com/od/players/p/Andres-Iniesta.htm">Andres Iniesta</a>,&nbsp;<a href="http://worldsoccer.about.com/od/players/p/Xavi-Hernandez.htm">Xavi</a>, Gerard Pique, Pedro, and&nbsp;<a href="http://worldsoccer.about.com/od/players/a/Fabregas.htm">Cesc Fabregas</a>.Other players to have lived at La Masia and gone on to play for the first team include Josep Guardiola, &nbsp;Carles Puyol, Pepe Reina, V&iacute;ctor Vald&eacute;s.

Ireland&rsquo;s dismal performance in the same tournament has only enhanced the glamour of Spain as the preferred destination for young soccer hopefuls, who in the past have tended to aim for top English clubs.

And Zak&rsquo;s father, Stephen, said: &lsquo;I know Zak is young to be doing this but kids are like a sponge at this age. People say we are mad but in Barcelona, he will be educated in the best footballing techniques. All we can do is go and see how it develops.

&lsquo;One of their former players saw him playing in Oz and recommended him. They offered Zak a trial in May and it was a great experience. It consisted of over 400 boys from all over the world. He was asked back in June when it was cut down to 90.

&lsquo;Then in a match between the top 16 players, Zak just ran riot and scored seven goals. He was phenomenal. Then we heard back two weeks ago and they offered him a spot.&rsquo;

The hard work will now begin for this young Irish wunderkind.

The Irish Messi?

<h2>FIFA WILL INTRODUCE GOAL-LINE TECHNOLOGY FOR THE FIRST TIME AT THE CLUB WORLD CUP THIS WEEK IN AN EFFORT TO ACCURATELY JUDGE WHEN BALLS CROSS THE GOAL LINE.</h2>

Prompted into action by England midfielder&#39;s Frank Lampard&#39;s disallowed goal against Germany at the 2010 World Cup, the technology will be employed in Thursday&#39;s competition curtain raiser between Sanfrecce Hiroshima and Auckland City as football&#39;s governing body finally answers calls for it to join the 21st century.

Hawkeye, widely used in cricket and tennis, and GoalRef, which uses a microchip in the ball and low magnetic waves around the goal, will be used at venues in Yokohama.

&quot;The important thing is for the technologies to perform as well as possible and there are no mistakes,&quot; Hawk-Eye&#39;s managing director Steve Carter said.

&quot;Obviously the worst scenario you can have is if the technology isn&#39;t that accurate is the TV broadcast cameras proving that the answer&#39;s wrong.&quot;

With European champions Chelsea, whose players have been at the centre of several goal-line controversies in recent years, competing in Japan, the science is set for even closer scrutiny.

&quot;Hawk-Eye has seven cameras per goalmouth,&quot; said Carter. &quot;You&#39;re talking millimetre level and that&#39;s absolutely essential for football.&quot;

Carter referred to John Terry&#39;s goal-line clearance in England&#39;s 1-0 win over Ukraine at Euro 2012 as an example of the precision required to get decisions right.

&quot;If you look at the John Terry incident, we measured it using the TV footage, the ball was actually 25 millimetres over the line,&quot; he said.

&quot;That is well within the accuracy of our system &ndash; two, three, four millimetres of accuracy in that scenario. Football needs that level.&quot;

Fifa had resisted pressure for technology, successfully used in other sports including cricket, tennis, rugby and American Football, for years.

But Lampard&#39;s goal for England against Germany in South Africa, not seen by either the referee or linesman, prompted Fifa to finally turn to science.

&quot;What happened at the World Cup in 2010 cannot happen again,&quot; Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke told reporters.

&quot;The World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world. The ball was not two centimetres in the goal &ndash; it was clearly in.

&quot;Millions of people see that and wonder how the referee didn&#39;t see it. That&#39;s the decision we made after the 2010 World Cup.&quot;

Hawk-Eye and GoalRef are front-runners for next year&#39;s Confederations Cup in Brazil, although Fifa have kept the door open for other competing companies.

&quot;It is expensive but over time technology gets cheaper,&quot; said Valcke, adding that Fifa had invested $2 million to date on development and installation at stadiums in Japan.

&quot;The more market competition there is the cheaper it will get. It has to be available for all but at the same time it has to be accurate. We can&#39;t afford mistakes.&quot;

After analysing data taken from the Club World Cup, Fifa will choose which system to implement for the six Confederations Cup venues by the end of March.&nbsp;<img src="https://admin.wemakefootballers.com/storage/article/s20.jpg" style="float:right; height:433px; width:433px" />

Those chosen will remain in place for the 2014 World Cup, although the six other venues could potentially end up with a different system.

&quot;Obviously the Confederations Cup is going to be a competitive tender process,&quot; said Carter.

Both the Hawk-Eye and GoalRef systems inform referees the ball has crossed the goal-line in a split second via a vibrating wristwatch flashing the word &quot;GOAL&quot;.

GoalRef were equally confident of persuading Fifa their radio-based system using low-frequency magnetic fields would be the most accurate.

&quot;We wouldn&#39;t be doing this if we weren&#39;t confident we were going to proceed further beyond this tournament,&quot; said programme manager Ingmar Bretz.

Whichever system Fifa chooses, the likes of Chelsea, eliminated from the 2004-05 Champions League by Luis Garcia&#39;s &quot;ghost&quot; goal, will have one less reason to blame the referee.

Hawk-Eye also floated the idea of an ultra-motion video replay, although stopping the game to watch a replay would be detested by Fifa President Sepp Blatter.

Goal-line Tech Makes Debut…

In my first post on four6zero, I would like to talk about a tactical formation with the following characteristics:

	<li>Prioritizes possession to control the game</li>
</ul>

<ul>
	<li>Pass and move style including lots of movement off the ball</li>
</ul>

<ul>
	<li>Played without an attacker constantly remaining in depth</li>
</ul>

<ul>
	<li>Requires versatile players who are comfortable in all parts of the pitch</li>
</ul>

<ul>
	<li>Suited to intelligent players who can read the game and have exceptional passing abilities</li>
</ul>

<ul>
	<li>Is often associated with high pressing to regain possession</li>
</ul>

<ul>
	<li>Used by the Spanish national team to win a major championship</li>
</ul>

If you guessed the formation is the striker-less 4-6-0 this site is named after, I&rsquo;m afraid your assumption would be incorrect. In fact, you wouldn&rsquo;t even have the correct sport. These are the characteristics of the 4-0 formation used in futsal, the indoor 5-a-side game created in South America. Both systems are, however, based on the same principles and I aim to explain how they work.

In the 1980s a Brazilian known as Zego was coaching a middling team in the Spanish futsal league. He knew that to increase his chances of winning against the stronger teams his team had to dominate possession.

He decided to adapt the most popular attacking system of 3-1 which included a pivot (striker in football) to 4-0. By abandoning the use of a pivot, his team would gain a numerical advantage in deeper areas, which would allow him to achieve his objective.

In 4-0 the players are positioned in a line across the field in an arch formation with the wingers slightly higher than the two central players.

In football&rsquo;s 4-6-0, you can draw parallel with Barcelona when Messi drops into the midfield, where Dani Alves, Jordi Alba, and Gerard Pique have already helped to create a substantial numerical mismatch for the opposing side.

Crucial to this setup are&nbsp;rotation of positions&nbsp;and&nbsp;rapid circulation of the ball with short passes. Players without the ball have the almost constant aim of opening a passing line for the player in possession, making sure he doesn&rsquo;t only have one option.

These two systems have the following advantages:

	<li>They will create space either behind the defence or between the lines.&nbsp;By overloading the middle of the pitch the opposition are left with a decision.&nbsp;Do the defenders playing against no attackers move forward to help their outnumbered midfield?&nbsp;This will leave less cover and create space in behind the defence that can be taken advantage of with through balls met by deep penetrating runs by quick players. In football Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas and Messi provide these passes for Pedro, Alexis, Villa and&hellip; Messi!&nbsp;Alternatively, the last line of defence can remain deeper but this allows space in between the lines behind the midfield for players to receive and turn.</li>
</ul>

<ul>
	<li>Secondly,&nbsp;the continuous movement of ball and players&nbsp;complicates the task of defending. The defence is forced to constantly shift and track the attackers&rsquo; movements, whether physically or visually. This makes it difficult to assign marking responsibilities, position themselves to provide cover or create defensive two-against-ones as well as requiring a huge physical effort.</li>
</ul>

As with any system it has its weaknesses.

With all the players in a narrow band there is no defensive cover which means if the ball is lost they are vulnerable to a quick transition. This is why these systems are often associated with pressing. To prevent the counter attack, it is important that the nearest player to the ball presses immediately to stop the opponent getting their head up to assess vulnerable areas.

In futsal this type of system is not used against defences that defend zonally near the goal. Barca and Spain have been criticised for not having a &lsquo;Plan B&rsquo; against these types of compact &lsquo;park the bus&rsquo; defences. Without the spaces to exploit, the system can be monotonous as there is possession without penetration.

These systems will not work with any random group of players. Their attributes must include the&nbsp;ability to think quickly, be comfortable in tight spaces&nbsp;and&nbsp;have precise passing to retain possession and play through balls. It requires&nbsp;quick players who can make deep penetrating runs behind the defence&nbsp;to meet these passes. It needs&nbsp;complete players&nbsp;as they can find themselves in any position.

Finally it needs harmony and co-ordination between the players. Other teams have found it difficult to imitate Barcelona and Spain as they have a wealth of these intelligent technical players, many of whom grew up together using a similar style of play in La Masia.

I would like to finish this post by recommending you watch the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup which starts on November 1st (Matches shown on Eurosport in UK). You will see that many aspects of futsal are becoming increasingly popular with modern football.

These include; possession football, playing between the lines, rotations of positions, high pressing, similar techniques with the ball (sole of the foot control, toe punt shots, scoops when in on goal) and using the goalkeeper as a sweeper in attack and defence. Not surprisingly many of the world&rsquo;s best players grew up playing futsal.

Barcelona star Andres Iniesta believes football perfection is impossible to attain and that instead his team focus on evolving every year.

The midfield magician, who is up for the this year&rsquo;s FIFA&#39;s Ballon d&#39;Or award against superstars Leonel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, says improvement not perfection is the aim of the squad at the Nou Camp.

Speaking to BBC&#39;s Football Focus programme, the 28-year-old said: &#39;There is no such thing as the perfect player. Everyone can improve and things can be done better. I rate myself as someone who enjoys the learning process and someone who tries to be better every year.

Perfection doesn&#39;t exist. There are players who are close but it is almost impossible to be perfect. If that was the case there wouldn&rsquo;t be evolution in football.

&#39;I don&#39;t consider myself a star. I consider myself a footballer who tries to improve myself by doing things well. What really makes me happy is when I feel I&#39;ve improved at the end of each year and I hope this feeling can go on and on.&#39;

Iniesta is a key part of the record-breaking Barcelona and Spanish national team that has won both the World Cup and last two European Champions and completed another year at the top of the FIFA world rankings.

Key to Barca’s Perfection

When England&rsquo;s plane flies over Holland today en route to Warsaw for Tuesday&rsquo;s World Cup qualifier against Poland, Roy Hodgson should look out of the window and give thanks to a certain Dutchman.

For it was the enlightened coaching of Rene Meulensteen that helped enhance the technique of Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck. Now assisting Sir Alex Ferguson, Meulensteen was skills development coach at Manchester United&rsquo;s academy from 2001 to 2005. 
A disciple of the skill-enriching Coerver Method, Meulensteen encouraged youngsters like Cleverley and Welbeck to express themselves, treating the ball as a friend, enjoying its company and potential. With Les Kershaw, the then academy director, committed to four v four matches, United led the way in player development.

 
Back in 2005, having worked with prospects like Welbeck and Cleverley, Meulensteen observed that if their generation &ldquo;carries on maturing, they&rsquo;ll have skills coming out of their ears&rdquo;.&nbsp;He had a mantra for the youngsters, wise counsel when he gathered them in the centre-circle of the indoor pitch at Carrington. &ldquo;You all have the ability,&rdquo; Meulensteen told them. &ldquo;But do you have the confidence to play in front of 10,000 people, 20,000, 30,000? Use all your time training.

Cleverley and Welbeck increasingly take responsibility. &ldquo;Rene did a lot of on-the-ball things, as many touches on the ball as you can, very technical work and that&rsquo;s paying off now because we&rsquo;re both comfortable on the ball,&rsquo;&rsquo; reflected Cleverley on Sunday. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve also been lucky to work with people at United like Paul McGuinness and Eric Harrison who&rsquo;ve improved me.&rdquo; 
United&rsquo;s new breed are pushing through into positions of prominence, as much with country as club. Cleverley, 23, has started all four games for Hodgson this season. Welbeck, 21, scored twice against San Marino on Friday. 
Even if both are left out against Poland as Hodgson considers a more experienced line-up, their long-term importance is clear.

We Should Thank Coach Rene Meulensteen

Dear people of football,

I&rsquo;ve cheated. You&rsquo;ve cheated. We&rsquo;ve all done it. We&rsquo;ve all condoned it. We&rsquo;ve all been upset when someone has done it to us.&nbsp;

There are many different forms of cheating: intentional/tactical fouls, diving, malicious tackles, shirt pulling/pushing, handballing, blocking, time-wasting, appealing for a throw in we know is not ours. So what&rsquo;s the difference? Most are used to gain an advantage but only one of those is potentially GBH if done on a Saturday night out instead of a football pitch.

The one that seems to make most people in Britain irate is not the one that is career threatening or one that happens most often. It is the one that is most publicised however. Unless it happens to be done by Michael Owen in a World Cup match against Argentina. By that point the high horse that is so often occupied has itself taken a dive.

Tony Pulis and his crap cap have called for a three game retrospective ban for players taking dives. I agree that rubbish diving looks like it belongs in a bad acting reel of Orlando Bloom. But bloomin hell, does it being more embarrassing than say shirt pulling make it more morally reprehensible? Pulis has claimed the moral high ground over a Luis Suarez dive, echoing his identical posturing following a recent ga<img src="https://admin.wemakefootballers.com/storage/article/img_3991.JPG" style="float:left; height:440px; width:440px" />me against Chelsea. The worst incident suffered by Stoke at Stamford Bridge was not the terrible Branislav Ivanovic dive but the horrendous David Luiz tackle on Jon Walters. Yet if Pulis called on retrospective bans for those, he might as well call an end to Andy Wilkinson&rsquo;s career now.

If anything shirt pulling is the real pinnacle of football cheating. It happens dozens of times in every game. Everyone does it, everyone accepts it. It affects outcomes but there&rsquo;s no bandwagon.&nbsp; It is &ldquo;Part of the game&rdquo;. Yes it is an illegal part of the game punishable by a free kick.

There are many stupid bandwagons on the tracks of British football. The anti zonal marking brigade is the flavour of the past 24 months or so. The anti card waving brigade need to have a look in the mirror,&nbsp; show themselves a red card and then slap themselves for their added stupidity to calm their hysteria.

Imagine a player gets kicked hard. You&rsquo;d rightfully feel wronged. On a human nature level your natural reaction is understandably one of fight or flight. So instead of fighting back against your assailant and getting sent off and causing further trouble you ask the law enforcer for justice. And suddenly you are the bad guy. &ldquo;We don&rsquo;t like to see that.&rdquo; The very same people who would like to see bans for divers don&rsquo;t like seeing an imaginary card being waved. Next time you are assaulted just take it on the chin.

EVERYONE has complained at a ref about a decision. Yet when it suits certain dimwits &ldquo;trying to influence a ref&rdquo; is offensive. Despite the fact EVERYONE does it when appealing for or against a decision as simple as a throw in or corner. So next time someone dives if anyone campaigns for justice, remind them they can&rsquo;t influence the ref and should just accept that a player has cheated against them and move on; after all apparently all of us want to see the game XI versus XI. That is more important than player safety or integrity of the game.

Often refs are judged by how many cards they have issued. Sky will display season stats like it correlates to a refs thirst for blood. Not all cards are justified but neither are the non carded fouls that deserved censure. In short, this is a pointless and misleading stat. It is not necessarily the referees fault if he has a game where players lose control. &ldquo;We don&rsquo;t like to see players sent off.&rdquo; Well if it is deserved, why not?

After all, a lack of enforced discipline is a bigger issue as escalations of offences continue on their merry way. Then retributions inevitably occur. So the aim of not sending off players has only led to more candidates for an early bath. That sounds like a genius policy. We should be more preoccupied about people repeatedly breaking the rules to their advantage and really ruining the true outcome of a game. The rules are the same for all. Abide by them. Apply them.

The excusers of applying the rules by showing cards will often say it&rsquo;s too early for a booking or plead innocence by uttering the famous, &ldquo;it was my first one ref&rdquo; defence. Last time I checked the rules you do not get a free hit but players have propagated this untruth and worse still so have the refs. This leniency has licensed thugs to be unjustifiably physical.

My complaints against other people&rsquo;s gripes have often been greeted by the familiar chorus of, &ldquo;stop whingeing&rdquo;. The irony of that protest seems to escape my not so conscientious objectors.

These are just some of the clich&eacute;s that are uttered across the land through all levels of the game. Luckily there are enough other catchphrases to keep it company.

&ldquo;Taking tackling out of the game.&rdquo; Another of the moron&rsquo;s myths. A clean tackle is a beautiful thing in its own right and players still do just that many times a game. The clampdown on unsafe tackles has not been severe enough as refs are more preoccupied with keeping eleven on the pitch than player safety particularly the lower down the leagues you go. Often hard tackling/limited ability/ menacing players are described as &lsquo;honest lads&rsquo;. The poor souls are just out there, trying their innocent best and are &ldquo;not that kind of player.&rdquo;&nbsp; The not so gentle men are often inadequate footballers that work hard and boot the opposition harder. Look it up in the dictionary and you&rsquo;ll see a picture of Lee Cattermole. Lovely lad.

&ldquo;Getting someone sent off&rdquo; is a heinous crime. Most get mildly upset when a ref fails to send off someone for a horror tackle. Getting someone sent off through deceit is another form of gamesmanship but in most of these examples it&rsquo;s only a cry for justice, which is fair and better than players becoming vigilantes and evening things up themselves. It may not be popular but grassing people up here is just fine with me. Players who are whistleblowers trying to affect the whistleblowers should be supported if they are calling for a just punishment. Stop hating on the snitches bitches!

Appalling appealing has only grown more depressing. For example, &ldquo;Handball!&rdquo; shouts from the whole crowd when a ball hits a player in the chest are routinely encouraged. Anyone upset at these attempts to influence a ref? No, thought not. Or it&rsquo;s close relation of calls &ldquo;Our ball!&rdquo; many a player has knowingly appealed for a throw when they know it came off them. More good sportsmanship regularly overlooked. The culture of, &ldquo;you don&rsquo;t ask you don&rsquo;t get&rdquo; and &ldquo;eventually you&rsquo;ll get a decision&rdquo; fuels injustice in stadiums and parks around the country. The hunt for these wrong decisions seems invisible to countless. Time to pack in these pursuit cases.

The crusade of anti-diving has even led to warped praise for players staying on their feet when being impeded. &ldquo;Fair play to Sergio Aguero for staying on his feet,&rdquo; came the sentiments when clearly fouled by Laurent Koscielny recently. People failed to grasp that it was UNFAIR play towards Aguero that he was denied a penalty despite the illegal contact.

So it appears cheating yourself is commendable if perverted. In fact it&rsquo;s this type of unpunished foul that encourages players to go to ground more easily, to accentuate contact to get the just decision. Eventually the natural conclusion is more players will dive in anticipation of contact that wont come and they will have chucked in a stupid looking dive. Fair play to unfair play it is.

&ldquo;Soft penalty,&rdquo; Alan Smith often utters in his many stupid commentaries, he doesn&rsquo;t think a decision is worth a penalty as it would have been harsh. It&rsquo;s either a foul or not Smudge you boring, life draining, fence-sitting, soul destroying half wit. Where on the pitch does not matter. Guess what a soft foul and a hard foul have in common? They are fouls!!

The classic, &ldquo;a little nudge,&rdquo; analysis followed by a little chuckle from Andy Gray. Richard Keys&rsquo; best mate used to revel in a bit of physical cheating in the box. It would be further praised as evidence of a bit of experience on the cheaters part. Even most watching would fail to feel cheated by the &lsquo;little nudges&rsquo; when they might have influenced a result just like a dive would. Cheaters do prosper.

&ldquo;Let him know you are there,&rdquo; with a good amount of force win the ball and maybe, probably, definitely hit the man as well. That&rsquo;ll show him you are ready to scare him into playing badly through physical intimidation. Welcome to the Premier League Johnny Foreigner. Now if only there was a game that you could go and practice that in legally. Oh yeah, wait yes there is it&rsquo;s called Rugby. Or running into a wall.

Now there is one phrase every professional or seriously cynical team has used. It&rsquo;s so common it&rsquo;s practically in the coaching manuals of the game. A &ldquo;good foul&rdquo; is tactical, cynical, calculated and presumes the punishment is worth the alternative of letting your opponent advance fairly. Our team has done it, we&rsquo;ve done it, we&rsquo;ve expected it. Yet it&rsquo;s a cancer that has its feet under the table of football and we are all happy to have it here.<img src="https://admin.wemakefootballers.com/storage/article/md-mahdi-1zc0lqzaduo-unsplash.jpeg" style="float:right; height:434px; width:434px" />

Frequently the alternative to punishing the multiple pulls, pushes, nudges and acts of cynicism in a game is seen as preposterous. &ldquo;But the ref would have to give 10 penalties a game&rdquo; the idiots would cry. Yes if 10 fouls in the box are committed then I would like to see 10 penalties awarded. &ldquo;But you&rsquo;d have games finishing 7-6,&rdquo; yes, no one likes to see goals. Goals are ghastly. I&rsquo;d much rather watch a boring, cynical 0-0 draw.

On a wider scale football is often castigated for lacking moral fibre in its nature when compared to sports like rugby and cricket. But most team sports have gamesmansh&hellip; I mean cheating in them.&nbsp; Rugby players look to gain an advantage by deception in or near the ruck all the time. Even in cricket, where discipline is much stricter, the players often appeal for dismissals they know not to be correct, or fail to admit when they have nicked a ball behind.

Therefore, if we want true fairness, surely the ultimate quest is calling fouls on yourself as the players often do in snooker. That is the final show of true sportsmanship. If we are not prepared to expect that, and no one is, then we are all promoting injustice.&nbsp;

What I&rsquo;m saying is not to ignore rule breakers in all their guises but that they are mostly part of the same cheating family. If anything the unfair calls for fair play in only certain situations are prejudiced calls of justice to suit certain bias. Until the clamour is unified we will go on with the hypocrisy of injustice bandwagons, ganging up on only certain versions of rule breakers, instead of calling on all cheats to be reprimanded.

Bottom line is we are all cheating ourselves.

The FAs pledge to invest &pound;150M into grass roots football will see 150 new artificial pitches being&nbsp;built, with the issues encountered this winter with waterlogged pitches, is this the way forward?

Artificial pitches were first used for football league games in the 1980s and dubbed &lsquo;plastic pitches&rsquo;. Top flight teams such as Oldham, QPR, Luton and Preston North End installed the pitches as their&nbsp;main playing surface. They were used by these team and dreaded by others until the FA banned&nbsp;their use in 1988. They gained a bad reputation with fans and visiting teams who found it hard to adapt to the new&nbsp;playing surfaces. The first artificial pitches were a lot harder than present day. The ball would&nbsp;bounce unpredictably over defenders, out for throw-ins and over the goals. The hard pitches were&nbsp;also very unforgiving on the players, resulting in more injuries, particularly serious joint injuries.

Slide&nbsp;tackles on the sand filled pitches would also cause serious, stinging friction burns. The new 3g pitches used in the modern game bring huge advances in technology and pitch research. They look and feel similar to grass pitches and are constructed from silicon coated rubber fibres&nbsp;held in place with a layer of rubber granules. The way the ball runs and bounces is true to a premier&nbsp;league football pitch. The surface always remains flat and divot free and of course the surface can be&nbsp;used practically all year round and often at night-time as they are usually floodlit.

The 2012-2013 season has seen the use of artificial pitches allowed in all competitions run by the&nbsp;FA. They made their debut in the FA cup in August 2012 and were allowed in the completion up and&nbsp;including the fourth qualifying round. The pitches are a great boost to grass roots football clubs who need to play games week in week&nbsp;out throughout the winter to fulfil league fixtures. With the use of three sets of&nbsp;<a href="http://www.thesoccerstore.co.uk/football-goals/goals-by-brand/samba-goals">Samba Mini Soccer&nbsp;Goals</a>&nbsp;the full playing surface can be split into three pitches and three mini soccer games can&nbsp;played. Training sessions are never missed and the pitches can be used for other sports by the local&nbsp;community.

Brendan Rodgers has taken exception to Alan Shearer&#39;s analysis of Joe Allen and believes it shows the former England striker does not grasp how his Liverpool team operate.

The Wales international has been one of Liverpool&#39;s better performers this season but was recently criticised on Match of the Day by Shearer for being too safe in possession and not attempting enough penetrating passes. That has prompted a staunch defence of Allen from the Liverpool manager, who paid &pound;15m for the midfielder to follow him from Swansea City to Anfield this summer, and a comparison to Paul Scholes&#39;s role for Manchester United.

&quot;I saw someone recently criticising Joe Allen for not playing risk passes. Unbelievable. So-called pundits who don&#39;t know the dynamics of a team and how it functions,&quot; said Rodgers. &quot;Joe&#39;s role is to keep the ball and that, in Britain, is a special talent. It is why Paul Scholes is still playing at his age. It is such a rare talent for a midfielder to rarely give the ball away.&quot;

The Liverpool manager is irked at the portrayal of Allen&#39;s conservatism when the 22-year-old has been moved into a defensive role as a result of injury to Lucas Leiva and for the balance of the team.

Rodgers explained: &quot;Initially when I came in, we played with one holding midfielder and two advanced ones. I didn&#39;t feel that we had the guy that opened the door for everything so I played Joe in there because he knows how to control the game. He is courageous and will go and get the ball in any area. But our positioning ahead of that wasn&#39;t so good, because we were too open. We have switched the team to play with two holding midfielders and one further forward. That has been Steven more or less, because he is the one that can do everything.&quot;

The Liverpool manager is adamant Allen will play a more prominent offensive role when Lucas returns from a thigh injury next month. He added: &quot;Joe, offensively, has more than what a lot of people have seen, just because he&#39;s had to play more of a sitting role. That comes when Lucas is back.

&quot;Where we have been really pleased with Joe is with his tactical discipline. Maybe he&#39;s never going to score as many as Steven but he&#39;s certainly got quality going forward. But his tactical discipline to stay and keep the shape of the team, and offer the passing line, has been very good. He will have a long career here, he&#39;s a wonderful talent and over time people will see what facets he&#39;s got in his game. Over time he will prove an absolute bargain.&quot;

For women&rsquo;s football in England, 2019 was a record-breaking year in every sense. More women played the sport than ever before, the Women&rsquo;s Super League attendance record was smashed on three separate occasions and the Lionesses secured record figures for those watching both in stadiums and at home on television.

The big question now is what does the future hold for women&rsquo;s football in England? After such an impressive 2019, can the game continue to maintain it&rsquo;s dramatic climb in popularity? The answer looks to be an unequivocal yes. We&rsquo;ve only been treated to a glimpse of what girls&rsquo; football can be in this country.

<h2>PARTICIPATION IN WOMEN&rsquo;S FOOTBALL</h2>

Every year, the Football Association release figures for the number of women who are regularly playing the sport and every year, that number increases. But nothing before has compared to the spike we saw in 2019.

According to the FA report, 2.63m women in England over the age of 16 played football last year. That&rsquo;s up from 1.7m in 2018, a rise of nearly a million in a single calendar year. For some idea of the speed at which women&rsquo;s football has grown over an extended period of time, in 1993 there were just 10,400 women playing the sport.

There are multiple reasons behind the explosion in female participation. Many grassroots clubs are now running women&rsquo;s sections alongside their long-standing male sections, creating a greater number of opportunities for girls to take up football. With this increase in clubs comes an increase in competitive leagues and improved coaching standards. This in turn incentives more females to play the sport.

The FA themselves have invested heavily in the women&rsquo;s game. In 2017, they set out an ambitious target of doubling female participation across football by 2020. In playing terms, that meant increasing the number of registered teams from 6,000 to 12,000. The latest figures show that they are well on course to achieving that number by the end of this year.<img alt="" src="https://www.wemakefootballers.com/static-file/images/uploads/Screen-Shot-2020-01-21-at-10.42.51.webp" style="height:305px; width:659px" />

<h2>INCREASED OPPORTUNITIES FOR GIRLS TO PLAY FOOTBALL</h2>

As part of the FA&rsquo;s &lsquo;Gameplan for Growth&rsquo; document, the association identified one of the key areas that could boost participation as getting more girls to take up the game at a young age. Encouraging and nurturing a lifelong love of football in school-aged girls would create a steady stream of talent who would continue playing the sport once they reached adulthood.

To achieve this aim, the FA launched their SSE Wildcat Centres, a network of 200 girls&rsquo; football clubs which were run in association with grassroots and professional sides for the purpose of providing free training to girls on a weekly basis.

Initially, the FA wanted 200 Wildcat Centres spread around England. So successful was the scheme that by 2019, there 1,250 running across the country.

Football coaching academies have been keen to seize on the benefits of running girls&rsquo; football programmes too. We Make Footballers are one of the south&rsquo;s leading coaching schools with their weekly sessions across the country open to girls of all abilities.

With increasing numbers of girls signing up to We Make Footballers for professional coaching in a fun and safe environment, many of the franchises are planning on launching girls-only sessions over the course of 2020.

At this moment in time, specialist girls&rsquo; football academies seem significant because they are uncommon. With the growth of the women&rsquo;s game in England, over the coming years they will become seen as normal a part of the football fabric in this country as boys&rsquo; academies.

<h2>THE WOMEN&rsquo;S SUPER LEAGUE</h2>

The FA introduced the Women&rsquo;s Super League in 2011. Originally played through the summer months, it switched to mirror men&rsquo;s football as a winter league for the 2017-18 season and in 2018-19, it became fully professional.

Although early days, the move to professionalism looks like it could be one of the most significant moments in the development of women&rsquo;s football in England. Standards have already risen markedly.

The prospect of being paid to pay the sport for a living meanwhile will no doubt entice many more girls into taking up football from a young age in the hopes of eventually becoming good enough to have a football career.

In order to partake in the WSL, the 12 members of the league must all offer their players a minimum of a 16-week contract and form a youth academy. These youth academies are designed to nurture the next generation of England stars, which will continue to drive standards up over the course of the next five years.

<h2>RECORD-BREAKING ATTENDANCES</h2>

The WSL attendance record was broken three times over the course of 2019; firstly when 5,265 saw Arsenal crowned 2018-19 champions with a 4-0 win away at Brighton&rsquo;s Amex Stadium in April.

The first ever women&rsquo;s Manchester Derby between City and United then attracted 31,213 to the Etihad Stadium on the opening day of the 2019-20 season. That record stood until November when 38,262 attended the North London Derby at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

All three of those records were set in stadiums belonging to Premier League clubs &ndash; and women&rsquo;s teams playing at the homes of their male counterparts looks like it will become a more frequent occurrence in the coming years.

The idea of &lsquo;double headers&rsquo; has even been raised in the future; whereby a women&rsquo;s match would take place at the same stadium on the same day as the corresponding men&rsquo;s match. You might buy a ticket for Chelsea v Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium and get to see the women&rsquo;s teams face off at 2pm before the men do likewise at 4pm.

Speaking of Chelsea, they too set an attendance record in 2019 for the most fans to watch a WSL game at a women&rsquo;s home ground. 4,790 supporters were at Kingsmeadow for the Blues&rsquo; 1-0 win over Manchester United in November.

Cheap ticket prices, the chance to watch some of the world&rsquo;s best talents and the accessibility of players &ndash; women&rsquo;s teams are famous for signing autographs and posing for selfies with fans after the final whistle &ndash; are making women&rsquo;s football in England a popular draw. Attendance figures will keep rising as a result.

<h2>INCREASED MEDIA COVERAGE</h2>

One of the most notable aspects of the Lionesses&rsquo; run to the World Cup semi finals last summer was the media coverage afforded to Phil Neville and his side. England didn&rsquo;t just make back page headlines with their World Cup exploits in France last summer &ndash; they were front page news too, turning the like of Steph Houghton, Lucy Bronze and Ellen White into household names in the process.

In terms of the WSL, matches are now broadcast live on BT Sport, by the BBC via their red button service and online. The 2018 FA Cup Final was shown in the primetime 5.30pm slot by the BBC for the first time and the 2019 final saw over two million people tune in to watch Manchester City beat West Ham United 3-0 live from Wembley.

As the game grows, so will the coverage it receives. Combined with record sponsorship agreements &ndash; Barclays signed a three-year deal to sponsor the WSL for a cool &pound;10m starting with this season &ndash; you can expect to see women&rsquo;s football in England receiving even greater levels of media interest.
